Map detail from Samuel Bowles, Across
the Continent, 1865.
Notice that the planned transcontinental railroad route as envisioned in
1865 went south of the Great Salt Lake via Salt Lake City. But the actual route
constructed instead went via Ogden, then to Promontory Summit, north of the Great
Salt Lake.
