Early American Express Co. receipt dated August 6, 1853, for the forwarding of "one box" shipped from New York to "A. Easterly, care [of] Chamberlain, St. Louis, Mo" via the overland lines of the Company's subsidiaries, Wells, Butterfield & Co. (from New York to Buffalo) and Livingston, Fargo & Co. (from Buffalo to St. Louis), for a fee of $20.   American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo, and  John Butterfield on March 18, 1850.
